Smoother highs, maybe a little rolled off compared to 300B's, but I loved them still.Still haven't got to hear a 45-based amp, though ! This pushes the driver into its nonlinear low-current region - once per cycle for a SE amp, twice per cycle for a PP amp. Convert to 6sn7 per your suggestion ( which would be a good exercise for my next project ....) I would still like to keep the input sensitivity around 1V. The 416's sounded light in the low bass with my SE845 with negative feedback, too much dampening factor for them.
But that's why DHT sound quality is all over the place - the driver section isn't up to the job." In short, much finger pointing against the soggy, highly colored sound DRIVERS First test with a basic circuit This basic circuit have very good sonic performances but it need a not common vacuum tube to be used in a integrated amp. As a biasing type I prefer cathode–biasing. 45 Se Zotl He did a lot of testing with various driver tubes, found the 5965 provided enough swing to drive the 300B to full power. I always thought that the Sylvanias were the best of the 6SN7 tube family. hop over to this website The driver tube is a 5842/417A.
I use a balanced (center tapped) transformer to power all components except for the woofers, which are fed directly from the dedicated 20A circuit for the system.Using the 2A3FFX, the sound It's when they are driven by feeble 5-8mA driver tubes that the characteristic 45, 2A3, 300B, or 845 signature appears. Large 100W core!! It does sound very nice, especially with the right 12AT7 driver tube, but I would think that I would probably get more out of the Tannoys with a few more watts.

However I was not sure about direct–coupled input/driver stage in there, and lately my doubts were confirmed: driver stage gave a lot distortion, and I have changed it for timely–tested SRPP Tom P.S: You could also try something along the DC-coupled 6SN7 driver shown at that site implemented in the 300B SE amp. My 45 SE ZOTL is enough to make alot of people's jaws drop all the way to the floor. The driver tube is a 5842/417A. 2a3 Tube
You will never go back, I'm sure of it, everything else sounds a bit bleached and distorted. Thinking back in my mind I could never tell what it really sounded like in there though; the "Academy Roll-Off" was in place so there was nothing over 8k on a It seems at ease, without being smoothed over or dull. On modern recordings CDs, DVD it has a very in your face, big sound, pleasent bass, Edisonic mid range and clean revealing, but not edgy highs. In the previous screen shot is visible the operating point using a pair of 2A3 as output tubes at max range. However, I might be wrong.
I only copied one 3 part article before shipping them off to the winning bidder. This implies that grid current is present during much of the duty cycle and is quite nonlinear. quote "My limited experience so far is that drivers actually contribute a stronger sonic signature than the output tubes, which are pretty transparent if driven by a low enough source impedance My original plan was to bi-amp my two way Altecs with an 845 on the woofer and a 45 on the tweeter.
I am actually running my Tannoy speakers now with a 2A3 bottlehead Stereomour. I've personally had moments listening to female vocalists with my 45 amp that have literally scared me out of the room, especially late at night. I much prefer the Sovtek 2a3 tubes over the Cetron 300b tubes that came with the unit. Instead of hearing the transparency and directness of the DHT power tube, you hear an overloaded RC-coupled driver instead." And, "the most colored-sounding (and highest-distortion) triode is the input section -
The 2a3 is a nice tube for sure, but it lacks the detail and clarity of a 45, there is also very little volume increase by gaining a watt or so: The flange of the horn is bolted to the front of the 3/4" baffle and the 416 is bolted to the back with non-reversed polarity. The sound is so relaxed while still being clean and detailed, it's just real natural sounding and un-forced. I've use mine in a direct reactance type amp I built (a variation on the Monkey or free lunch circuit) that is direct coupled: no capacitors in the signal path.
